What’s the right name – Neurofeedback or EEG Biofeedback?

Providers and researchers have not agreed on a single name. Several names are interchangeable. The most common are “neurofeedback”, “EEG Biofeedback”, and “EEG neurofeedback”. Other names you’ll hear are “neurotherapy”, “neurobiofeedback”, and “brainwave therapy”. But the most common usage by far is “neurofeedback”.

There are those who argue that a new name should be developed. It is unlikely to happen; there’s too much energy invested in neurofeedback so far. Also, no one has come up with a good alternative. Here are a few reasons that the word neurofeedback sometimes causes issues among professionals more than the public:

  1. Professionally, the word “neuro” is often linked to neurologists or neuropsychologists.
  2. In the past, neurologists sometimes have thought that anyone doing neurofeedback is stepping on their toes.
  3. EEG biofeedback clearly puts off the mental health field. Most think EEG is in the medical domain.
