What’s the right name -  Neurofeedback or EEG Biofeedback?

Providers and researchers have not agreed to a single name.  Several names are really interchangeable.  The most common are neurofeedbackEEG Biofeedback, and EEG neurofeedback.  Other names you'll hear are neurotherapy, neurobiofeedback, and brainwave therapy. But the most common usage by far is neurofeedback.

There are those who argue that a new name should be developed.  It is unlikely to happen - there's too much energy invested in neurofeedback so far.  Also, no one's come up with a good alternative.  Here's a few reasons that the word neurofeedback sometimes causes issues among professionals more than the public.

  1. Professionally, the word neuro is often linked to neurologists or neuropsychologists.  In fact, it's a behavioral intervention - which means psychologists.
  2. Neurologists sometimes have thought that anyone doing neurofeedback is stepping on their toes. Then they might not ever get to listen to what it actually is.
  3. EEG biofeedback clearly puts off the mental health field. Most think EEG is in the medical domain.
